The Most Common Types of Skin Allergies - Symptoms and Treatments

A skin allergy is a reaction to an allergen or irritant. Symptoms can include scaly, itchy skin, bumps, redness, blisters, welts, and rashes and treatment includes taking medications, soothing and calming the skin, and treating the underlying condition causing the skin allergy. Itchy skin can be a symptom of an underlying illness. These include liver disease, kidney failure, iron deficiency anemia, thyroid problems, and certain cancers, including multiple myeloma and lymphoma.
Bumps, itching, redness, and other skin conditions are common and their cause may not be easily identifiable. A board-certified allergist can help determine if your symptoms are the result of allergies.

There are different types of skin allergy Eczema and hives, both of which are related to allergies, and these are two of the most common types of skin rashes. If your skin condition is the result of an allergy, an allergist can diagnose and treat your condition, so you can live life to the fullest.

Eczema
Eczema also known as atopic dermatitis, affects between 10 and 15 percent of children and 1 to 2 percent of adults. A common symptom of eczema is dry, red, irritated and itchy skin. Sometimes, especially when infected, the skin may have small, fluid-filled bumps that ooze a clear or yellowish liquid.

Hives
Hives is an outbreak of swollen, pale red bumps or plaques (wheals) on the skin that appear suddenly -- either as a result of the body's reaction to certain allergens or for unknown reasons. Hives usually cause itching, but may also burn or sting. Acute urticaria (Hives) is most commonly caused by exposure to an allergen or by an infection. The cause of chronic urticaria (Hives) is largely unknown.

Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is a red, itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an allergic reaction to it. The rash isn't contagious or life-threatening, but it can be very uncomfortable. Sometimes an allergen won’t cause a skin reaction unless the skin is also exposed to sunlight. This condition is called photo allergic contact dermatitis. It can occur with products such as shaving lotion, sunscreen, and some perfumes.
